The Leather Business’s wholly owned subsidiary Contemporary Leather in Chennai India has moved to new and larger premises in order to help keep up with increased demand.

The new building is in an up and coming area of Chennai and is 25,000 sq. feet in size. It has been completely refurbished to international standards and is kept in an immaculate condition.

The workforce which now numbers 250 people enjoys the benefit which will pass all International audit norms in Social Accountability and we will soon start the process of certification. Workers are provided with free transportation, food and a clean and spacious environment to work efficiently.

Local MD Jose Thomas is justifiably proud of the new factory, he comments “In just 4 years we have come from a fairly basic 6000 sq.-ft. Factory in a poor area to this modern factory in an excellent area. Everyone has worked very hard to get us into the factory with a minimum of disruption to our customers. Gradually our output will now increase and lead times improve”

Chairman John Thorp added “Obviously the Leather Business in the UK is a major customer for our Indian business, but we also have customers in Japan. The Middle East, Hong Kong, Europe and of course in India itself. We have managed not only to survive but to expand during the worst recession that the world has seen which is a credit to all involved”
