After 20 years of using mercury-free domed labels on their merchandise packaging, The Sweet People are welcoming official regulations from the EU that will see the total ban of all mercury catalysts used in resin doming from the 1^st January 2018.

The Sweet People and their sister company, Liquid Lens, have been raising the bar on safety throughout the production of their confectionery and non-confectionery merchandise lines for the past 20 years.  Over the past two years, The Sweet People have voluntarily subjected themselves to the toughest food safety audits from SALSA, building on their already high safety standards in factory production and packaging.

“Our packaging has always been a stand-out part of what we do in the promotional merchandise industry,” explained Mandy Hastie, MD at The Sweet People.  “We’ve built our reputation on safety and quality.  The personalized domed labels are where we started out and we made the choice, from the very beginning, to only use mercury-free domed labels on all of our tins, bags, boxes and tubes.”

In October 2017, the EU bought in the first phase of the mercury regulation, banning five mercury catalysts commonly used in resin doming.  From the 1^st January 2018, legislation will come into force banning the production of all mercury-based resins, in a move to improve safety and reduce environmental impact.

“We wholeheartedly welcome the ban in mercury-based resins,” added Mandy.  “Whilst it doesn’t affect us or our customers directly, it will help to improve overall standards in merchandising and packaging, and consequently the safety of the industry’s customers.”
