Domed labels are used extensively throughout the labelling, promotions and merchandise industries.   They’re easy to personalise, affordable, durable and can be used on a seemingly endless list of promotional products but last year the EU introduced the first of a two-part mercury ban that will affect producers of resin gel labels from 2018.

From January 2018, all mercury-based resins will be prohibited throughout Europe

In October 2017, the EU banned five mercury catalysts present in many commonly used label resins and, from January 2018, the legislation will bring in a total ban that prohibits production of doming resins that include any mercury catalysts, which will affect producers of badges and labels throughout the UK.

As the leading supplier of DIY desktop doming machines, worldwide, Liquid Lens has been supporting the UK doming industry since 1998 and continues to be one of the only companies to offer high-grade resins that are free from mercury.

“This move by the EU to ban mercury catalysts is a positive one that improves the safety and environmental impact of resin, which is something we’ve supported since we started.  We’d like to let all customers of our resins know that we have only ever sold mercury-free resins.  They have been and will continue to be compliant, and won’t need to make any changes,” commented Steve Hastie, MD at Liquid Lens.

Those who have been using mercury-based resins will need to find alternative solutions when the new regulation comes into force.

“We’ve been advising companies on what they need to do to remain compliant,” added Steve.  “We encourage anyone who is unsure of what resin or equipment to use, to speak to their suppliers or contact us for advice as there are various, legally compliant solutions available.”

“A few people were historically misinformed that the mercury-free resins weren’t as durable or quick to dry, but that’s just a myth.  In actual fact, mercury-free resins do air dry and can also be accelerated in the oven.  The mercury-free resins also have a beautifully smooth, non-tacky finish that is touchable, exceptionally durable and crystal clear, making them perfect for personalised branding, signs and labels.”
